Expectations Versus Reality Of Uni
Welcome to my blog!
Here is everything you may think you know about university vs what it can really be like…
My credentials? I’m a second year student who survived first year halls and fell for the glamorous TikTok’s and YouTube videos making uni seem like a constant ray of sunshine! ☀️
Lectures~
During my first year I believed uni would be nothing different to my routine back in sixth form. Up early, stick on your uniform, take a bite of toast and head out for a long day of classes and chatting with friends.
Low and behold it is not the same - while you may be graced with a 1pm start and a full wardrobe ready to be rummaged through; it is somehow harder to plan an outfit, remember stationary and worst of all which room AND building to be in all while trying to be social and make connections.
But don’t let this get you down, come your second month at uni it makes you wonder why you dwelled all that time. Although having a signature jogger and hoodie combo definitely helps!
Expenses~
It’s what everyone dreads 😔Months leading up to move in day your picking up extra shifts at your part time job, getting your last few night out with the girls…and guys and most of all having family members around you saying about how expensive living alone will be.
Now while this is both and expectation and reality there are very easy ways to help yourself out!
1- You don’t need that fancy iPad and pen that super aesthetic girl in ur lecture has. That £1 notebook and old pen from school does the trick :)
2- You will eat out more than you anticipate (still guilty of this, especially after a night out) however do a small food shop once a week to get the essentials and things you can snack on so that centra doesn’t call ur name at 11pm and all of a sudden you’ve spent £20 on stuff you probably don’t even like
3- Treat yourself!! After all you’ve made it to uni and are navigating a whole new path. That’s reason to celebrate 🩷 don’t feel bad about buying an ice coffee once in a while, you deserve it.
Friendships~
As we see in many TikTok's and in daily life, most people have a million friends at uni. Feel like that isn't you? well join the club sis!
Making friends may come more naturally to some as it is others. And that’s okay!
Those people in your flat don’t have to be your best friends, with over 5 thousand people on campus those initial 6 people are a sample of the many people you will meet.

During my first weeks of uni I thought I’d never make friends because I was in a flat of 5 other people who only said a couple words a day in the kitchen but gradually you meet more people and start to find your feet and your people! So don’t be disheartened, smile at everyone and join group chats ( it’s how I’ve met most of my dear friends at uni)
